子zǐ贡gòng问wèn友yǒu。子zǐ曰yuē，忠zhōng吿gào而ér善shàn道dào之zhī，不bù可kě则zé止zhǐ，毋wú自zì辱rǔ焉yān。

Modern Chinese Guide

子贡请教怎样对待朋友。孔子说：忠心地劝告他，好好地引导他，如果他不听就作罢，不要自讨没趣、自取其辱。

James Legge Translation

Tsze-kung asked about friendship. The Master said, "Faithfully admonish your friend, and skillfully lead him on. If you find him impracticable, stop. Do not disgrace yourself."
