子曰,奢则不孙,俭则固,与其不孙也,宁固。

孔子说:奢侈了就会显得不谦逊,节俭了就会显得寒酸。与其不谦逊,宁可寒酸一些。

The Master said, "Extravagance leads to insubordination, and parsimony to meanness. It is better to be mean than to be insubordinate."
