避世的隐士有伯夷、叔齐、虞仲、夷逸、朱张、柳下惠、少连。孔子说:不降低自己的志向,不辱没自己的身份,大概就是伯夷、叔齐吧。他评论柳下惠、少连说:他们降低了志向,辱没了身份,但言语合乎伦理,行为合乎人心,也不过如此罢了。他评论虞仲、夷逸说:他们避世隐居,放言不羁,立身清白,弃官合乎权变。我却同这些人都不一样,没有什么一定要这样,也没有什么一定不这样。

1. The men who have retired to privacy from the world have been Po-i, Shu-ch'i, Yu-chung, I-yi, Chu-chang, Hui of Liu-hsia, and Shao-lien. 2.
