Qi

子华使于齐，冉子为其母请粟。子曰，与之釜。请益。曰，与之庾。冉子与之粟五秉。子曰，赤之适齐也，乘肥马，衣轻裘，吾闻之也，君子周急，不继富。原思为之宰，与之粟九百，辞。子曰，毋，以与尔邻里乡党乎。

1. Tsze-hwa being employed on a mission to Ch'i, the disciple Zan requested grain for his mother. The Master said, "Give her a fu." Yen requested more. "Give her an yu," said the Master. Yen gave her five ping. 2. The Master said, "When Ch'ih was proceeding to Ch'i, he had fat horses to his carriage, and wore light furs. I have heard that a superior man helps the distressed, but does not add to the wealth of the rich." 3. Yuan Sze being made governor of his town by the Master, he gave him nine hundred measures of grain, but Sze declined them. 4. The Master said, "Do not decline them. May you not give them away in the neighborhoods, hamlets, towns, and villages?"

子在齐闻韶，三月不知肉味，曰，不图为乐之至于斯也。

When the Master was in Ch'i, he heard the Shao, and for three months did not know the taste of flesh. "I did not think" he said, "that music could have been made so excellent as this."

齐景公问政于孔子。孔子对曰，君君，臣臣，父父，子子。公曰，善哉，信如君不君，臣不臣，父不父，子不子，虽有粟，吾得而食诸。

1. The Duke Ching, of Ch'i, asked Confucius about government. 2. Confucius replied, "There is government, when the prince is prince, and the minister is minister; when the father is father, and the son is son." 3. "Good!" said the duke; "if, indeed; the prince be not prince, the minister not minister, the father not father, and the son not son, although I have my revenue, can I enjoy it?"

齐景公有马千驷，死之日，民无德而称焉，伯夷叔齐，饿于首阳之下，民到于今称之。其斯之谓与。

1. The duke Ching of Ch'i had a thousand teams, each of four horses, but on the day of his death, the people did not praise him for a single virtue. Po-i and Shu-ch'i died of hunger at the foot of the Shau-yang mountain, and the people, down to the present time, praise them. 2. "Is not that saying illustrated by this?"

齐景公待孔子，曰，若季氏，则吾不能，以季孟之闲待之。曰，吾老矣，不能用也。孔子行。

The duke Ching of Ch'i, with reference to the manner in which he should treat Confucius, said, "I cannot treat him as I would the chief of the Chi family. I will treat him in a manner between that accorded to the chief of the Chi, and that given to the chief of the Mang family." He also said, "I am old; I cannot use his doctrines." Confucius took his departure.

齐人归女乐。季桓子受之，三日不朝，孔子行。

The people of Ch'i sent to Lu a present of female musicians, which Chi Hwan received, and for three days no court was held. Confucius took his departure.

大师挚适齐，亚饭干适楚，三饭缭适蔡，四饭缺适秦。鼓方叔入于河，播鼗武入于汉，少师阳，击磬襄入于海。

1. The grand music master, Chih, went to Ch'i. 2. Kan, the master of the band at the second meal, went to Ch'u. Liao, the band master at the third meal, went to Ts'ai. Chueh, the band master at the fourth meal, went to Ch'in. 3. Fang-shu, the drum master, withdrew to the north of the river.
