子张问怎样才能行得通。孔子说:说话忠诚守信,行事笃实恭敬,即使到了偏远的蛮貊之地,也能行得通。说话不忠诚守信,行事不笃实恭敬,即使在本乡本土,又怎能行得通呢?站立时,就仿佛看见忠信笃敬这几个字显现在面前;坐在车上时,就仿佛看见它们靠在车前的横木上。做到这样,然后才能到处行得通。子张把这些话写在腰间的大带上。
